There are many misconceptions relating to SEO (Search Engine Optimisation)
and we hope to clarify some points about SEO (AKA google
rankings) here.
Many individuals
or comapnies that require website design will state a project requirement
of something along the lines of "SEO, I want to be on the 1st
page of google". The first point we would like to clarify is
that SEO and achieving 1st page google
search results are different things.
- SEO simply
means that your site will be designed and built in such a way
that internet search engines such as google,
msn
and ask
(previously known as 'Ask Jeeves') will be able to easily read
the sites content and correctly categorise it for use in internet
search engine criteria.
- Achieving 1st page google search engine results
in an entirely different thing, it is the actual process of getting
your site listed on the first page of a google search (or any
other search engine).
Google
works by taking your 'key words' (this is the text you entered into
google's search engine) and looks for these key words amongst its
vast indexes of the internets content. Whilst looking for the results
it will 'score' each result based on a set of criteria. This criteria
is described in much greater detail by Eric
Wolfram in his website 'score
higher in the Google search engine' but in essence is based
upon the number of external references to your site. For example,
if our site Bailworth
Solutions had a link to Eric
Wolfram's website (which it does) then he has an external reference
to his site, from ours. This would count in his favour when a google
search is performed.
Achieving very
high google rankings for your website is no easy feat, it takes
time and money. There are no shortcuts, so you should get used to
this fact. The best way to achieve good google rankings straight
away for your website is to get Google
Adwords. You can set a monthly budget and pay on a 'per click'
basis. You may not have already set yourself a budget for Google
Adwords but it's definately worth thinking about and lets face it,
your running a business so visits to your site will equal customers
and customers equal profits.
Lastly, if you
have a website and want to keep track of its search engine rankings
then we recomend downloading a free version of 'Web
CEO' ranking and optimisation tool. It's a great tool that we
think you'll find indispensible for tracking your sites performance.
